Is the router a switch?

When it comes to switches and routers, some people don’t know what they are used for, while others don’t know what is the difference between them, especially in the media to promote the "routing" of the three-layer switch. Now the difference between switches and routers is becoming more and more blurred, and their functions are beginning to penetrate each other. Not only does the Layer 3 switch have some of the "routing" functions that originally belonged to routers, but now broadband and high-end enterprise-level routers have also begun to have the "switching" function of switches. It can be described as mutual penetration, so some people predict that in the future, switches and routers are likely to be combined into one, and the author also firmly believes this. Because now from a technical point of view, achieving this goal is not too difficult at all, and it is also an urgent need for users.

But at present, routers and switches are still two different things, although routers and switches are data exchange equipment, there are essential differences.
Router is the main node equipment of the Internet. The router determines the forwarding of data through routing. The forwarding strategy is called routing, which is the origin of the router name.As the interconnection hub between different networks, the router system constitutes the main context of the Internet based on TCP/IP. It can also be said that the router constitutes the skeleton of the Internet. Its processing speed is one of the main bottlenecks of network communication, and its reliability directly affects the quality of network interconnection.
A switch is a network device used to forward electrical signals. It can provide an exclusive electrical signal path for any two network nodes connected to the switch. The most common switch is an Ethernet switch. Other common ones include telephone voice switches, optical fiber switches, and so on. The main functions of the switch include physical addressing, network topology, error checking, frame sequence and flow control. At present, the switch also has some new functions, such as support for VLAN (virtual local area network), support for link aggregation, and some even have the function of a firewall.

The difference between routers and switches can be understood from the following four aspects
1. The router can automatically assign IP to your local area network, virtual dial-up, just like a traffic police, directing your computer where to go, you don't have to worry so much. The switch is only used to distribute network data.
2.  The router is at the network layer, and the router is addressed according to the IP address. The router can handle the TCP/IP protocol, but the switch cannot. The switch is at the relay layer, and the switch is addressed according to the MAC address.
3. The router can assign one IP to many hosts, and these hosts only show one IP to the outside. The switch can connect many hosts, each of which has its own external IP.
4.  The router provides the firewall service, but the switch cannot provide this function. Hubs and switches are used for port expansion, which is to expand the access point of the local area network (usually Ethernet), which means that the local area network can be connected to more computers. Routers are used to connect between networks, that is, to connect different networks.
